How to make Beetroot Masala Curry(Kootu) - Recipe for Beetroot masala Curry

I wanted to share a very exciting and some different but colorful recipe with you all. That is Beetroot masala curry. My mom used to cook the beetroot poriyal very often in the usual way. But i wanted to try some thing new with this wonderful and healthy vegetable. That's is how i got this..I prepared this for some potluck and also at home a couple of times. My friend Ruby is great fan of this..She also tried and she said it came out very well...Please check this receipe will not be disappointed


Beetroot - 1 cup chopped (250 grams)
Onion - 1 small (cut in lengthwise)
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Salt - 1/4 tsp

Masala to grind:

Coconut grated - 5 tsps
Garlic - 2 cloves
Ginger - 1 inch piece
Red chilli - 3 nos
Cloves (kiraambu) - 1
Cinnamon - 1/2 inch
Fennel seeds - 1/4 tsp

For Seasoning:

Oil - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Asafoedita(zinc) - 1/8 tsp
Curry leaves - some

Method of preparation:

1. Grind all masala together with 1/4 cup of water in a mixie bowl and keep it aside
2. Add the grinded masala to the pan and allow the masala to boil/cook for 5 minutes.
3. Add the beet root, turmeric, salt with half cup of water, mix it well and close the lid.
4. Cook this mixture for 5 more minutes and check whether the beet root is cooked well. Make sure the water is drained out from beetroot.
5. Now heat 2 tsps of oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. Allow them to crackle, add urad dal, onion. Fry for a minute and add add curry leaves, asafoedita powder and pour this to beetroot masala and fry for a minute.

That's it!!! the Yummy, spicy and colour ful beetroot masala is ready !!! 

Best combination:

This will go pretty much for all variety rice including lemon rice, coconut rice, tamarind rice, curd rice, etc.
